Perielio

A grey field of space with faint orange stars: a pale blue station block in the middle, a second block tilted at the top right, and in the top left corner the pilot's readout in white text, system, credits, hull, the jump to the next star, fuel.

One galaxy, shared by everyone who flies in it, at full scale: a server decides every position and every outcome, and what you discover is yours by name.

03. Rereads: Elite. Braben and Bell, 1984.

1.0 The old rules

Kept whole

A ship, a galaxy, and nothing but what you can earn.

You fly a ship with six degrees of freedom through a star system generated from a seed: the star, the planets and the stations are the same for every pilot who arrives. You dock, trade between stations, fire and take hits, and when the ship is lost you are back in the system with less than before.

From the right distance you jump to a neighbouring star, and the galaxy is as wide as it was in 1984.

2.0 The new question

What if the galaxy were one place, shared, at full scale?

The galaxy is one place, and the server is the only truth.

A star system runs on one server, and every pilot in it stands in the same place with the same facts, so a fight or a trade never depends on whose machine you landed on. Your ship sends only what you do; the server decides where you are, how fast you move and how it ends.

When you jump, the server that runs the system you leave hands you over to the one that runs the system you reach, so the galaxy is crossed rather than loaded. What you are worth out there is what you have found and whom you have dealt with, rather than the hours you have put in, and a discovery is yours by name.

The same view at full width: the two pale blue blocks of the prototype against grey space, the orange stars thinner, and the pilot's readout in the top left corner.
